The average woman menstruates for 4-8 days a month for 33 years of her life. Summed up, that’s 6-8.5 years of bleeding!
In Israel and many other countries, period products are still classified as “cosmetics,” “female hygiene products,” or even “luxury goods.” This means they are not exempt from customs taxes, not subsidized, and not included in the list of services and products covered by the healthcare system. This means the average Israeli woman pays 74 thousand shekels in her lifetime just for being a woman who menstruates.
The “Sister” brand shows an alternate reality where the State of Israel recognizes this biological process and chooses to subsidize women’s second aid products to normalize discourse about menstruation. The project adopts an optimistic and humorous tone, in keeping with Israeli culture.
