The iconic anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” depicts a futuristic scene in 2015. The world faces an invasion of bodies called “angels”, the hero of the show Shinji fights them with the help of a giant robot called EVA 01 which he pilots. Throughout the series, Shinji has different conflicts with relationships, love, sexuality, and past traumas. Following my deep connection to the character, I chose to combine my experiences and inner world with the imaginary universe that the work built. The process of creating this collection represented opening scarred wounds from the past and raising questions about the future. The inspiration for the silhouettes was drawn from the robots, which in combination with men’s tailoring created an androgynous and powerful look; the prints in the collection came from my original ink drawings and acrylic illustrations that study body, apocalyptic scenes, and Japanese architectural movement known as “metabolism”. All of these put together an impactful men’s collection using wool, drill, lycra, and leather combined with handmade beaded fabrics in patterns that reminiscent of biological processes with laser-cut printed metals to create the future non-binary robots.
