My collection deals with control and loss of control in two aspects: Man’s control over nature and man’s control over himself. I linked this idea with three subjects: Bees, Queen Elizabeth I, and chaos theory. The bees represent a controlled social and hierarchical system, while also being a crucial component maintaining the ecological balance. However, mankind exploits natural resources, driving them to extinction and upsetting this balance. Queen Elizabeth I is an example of a feminine powerful monarchy, devoting herself to the people as a “virgin-queen” married to her realm. Chaos theory describes systems of physics with known models that are nonetheless unpredictable and uncontrolled. The fashion industry today is losing control. The trend toward fast fashion creates pollution, and customers are disconnected from the manufacturing process. The women’s collection I created incorporates wide use of handcrafts such as knitting and embroidery in order to create long-lasting and valuable garments.
