Pasha Matz was born in Ukraine and grew up in a housing project for evacuees from the Chernobyl disaster. He is the second generation of a family of “liquidators”: civil and military personnel who were employed, under duress and often without protective equipment, to clean up the areas affected by radiation after the nuclear disaster on 26.4.1986.

The title of the exhibition, 01:23:40, is the exact hour that the nuclear core at Chernobyl exploded. Matz recently took a tour of the city, which is a closed military zone to this day and mostly abandoned. Visitors are allowed only by appointment, accompanied by a certified guide and wearing protective equipment. Matz presents the photographs he took on his visit to the city. In addition to the optical exposure of the photography, the film was exposed to the radiation still present in the disaster area, and the final photographs reflect this double exposure.
