Pavel Efanov was born in Moldova. His project uses the genre of self-portrait as a tool for constructing and deconstructing identity while examining social and cultural conventions and myths. In these photographs, the figure of the artist is manifested in various identities, or in different nuances of the same imaginary figure. The work is composed of several units, each dedicated to a different topic. One unit displays the artist’s self-portraits, taken in the style of black-and-white studio photography from the period of World War I and II. The second section presents the portrait of the artist as an urban character using costumes and props to improvise identity fantasies for the camera.
