In her graduate project, Michal Fromer presents works made primarily of paper, using a technique of crumpling the paper up, dipping it in ink, wringing it out, and drying it. Starting from a point of visual, emotional, and material research, Fromer established a “laboratory” in her studio to see how different types of paper react to ink and black industrial dye, while devoting herself to the creative urge, the act of crumpling, and the mess that accompanies the research process. The many products of her research are collected into a black heap upon which accumulate additional materials like blackened Styrofoam and black found objects. Though the products are many, each object has its own unique character. The drawings displayed depict creatures, some imaginary and some which have a grasp on reality.
