This graduate project was conducted in the framework of Horizon 2020, an international program run by the EU. The project aims to expand the use of fish skins, which are currently food industry waste.

The project worked on developing finish processes for the surface of the fish skins.

Focus was placed on three processes of coating and finish:

  • Water repellent treatment: developing a coating that prevents damage to the skins resulting from getting wet, and removes the unpleasant feeling of wearing the skin when it is soaked in water.
  • Oil repellent treatment: creating a coating that prevents staining and damage to the skin resulting from contact with oily materials.
  • Creating a conductive and antibacterial coating that can develop uses for the skins in the biomedicine and smart wear industries.
