Music is an integral part of social processes and a pioneer of all social revolutions. It is the first to join them and sometimes even precedes them – an accurate reflection of society and its power structures. “Mizrahi” music was designed as a cultural hybrid of East and West, a cultural structure that could have been created only in Israel. It began as a “hidden subculture” in Israel and began to break into mainstream popular Israeli culture in the 1970s through cassette tapes. It is this music that inspired the project.
Mizrahi music initially gained popularity in Israel’s so-called “development towns”, and it brought attention to the chasm between the home environment of Mizrahi music and the extravagance it presented on stage, which inspired this men’s Ready to Wear collection. The collection makes use of prints inspired by cassette and record covers, uses velvet fabrics and corduroy, and on the other hand makes extensive use of denim and nylons that represent the gulf between high and low; between the stage and the hood.
