Mask: Throughout humanity’s history, masks have played an important role in defining the self. A mask allows people to try on new characteristics and identities with temporary, formal, color, and material changes.
Deficiency: We all have certain deficiencies. From time immemorial, humans have tried to overcome their deficiencies with objects: a spear, for example, or stilettos and sunglasses.
Functional Absence: With this experimental project, I focused on understanding the role our deficiencies play in defining our identity. To this end, I designed a “mediating object” which, unlike the objects we use to overcome our deficiencies, allows us to conspicuously wear them with a mask. The mask outlines the face using a frame with nine modular, dynamic filters attached. This system allows the person to temporarily wear their deficiencies using combinations of different filters, which act as screens between the human face and the world.
